Train Lines covered by JR Pass / Activating the Pass

While searching for routes on Hyperdia, I noticed that the names of some train lines do not start with the letters JR or the word Shinkansen. Can the JR Pass be used only on train lines with names starting with JR or Shinkansen?

To be sure, may I know if the following train lines are covered by the JR Pass?

1) Ltd Exp Odoriko 105 / 106 /108
2) Ltd Exp Super View Odoriko 2 / 3 / 8
3) Aoimori Railway
4) Izuhakone Railway Sunzu Line
5) Ltd Exp (Wide View) Hida 4 / 7 / 9
6) Meitetsu Ltd Exp
7) Meitetsu Mu-Sky Ltd Exp
8) Keisei Skyliner 29
9) Keisei Main Line Ltd Exp
10) Ltd Exp Narita Express 27

I'm planning to travel down to the Izu Peninsula, then travel from Shuzenji to Nagoya. Hyperdia shows that I have to travel from Shuzenji to Mishima to connect to the Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya. Can I activate the JR Pass at Shuzenji or can I do it only at Mishima? I'm concerned that I may not have time to do it at Mishima while changing trains. Due to my proposed travel itinerary (travelling from Nagoya to Takayama where I'll be staying 4 nights covering the spring matsuri, before travelling back to Tokyo), I don't think I can activate it before travelling to the Izu Peninsula.

Can you advise? Thanks.

Hi there,

It seems that you've pickled a couple of trains not covered by the JR Pass. The following from your list will require normal tickets.

Ltd Exp Odoriko 105 / 106 /108 (Partly covered by the JR Pass, up to the Izu peninsule, alternatives free of charge are available)
2) Ltd Exp Super View Odoriko 2 / 3 / 8
3) Aoimori Railway
4) Izuhakone Railway Sunzu Line
6) Meitetsu Ltd Exp
7) Meitetsu Mu-Sky Ltd Exp
8) Keisei Skyliner 29
9) Keisei Main Line Ltd Exp

Basically a line with an other companies name gives it away :)

As for activating the JR Pass, it can be done at the follow stations. You could do so before traveling to Izu and select a 1st day of use for a later date. This way you would not have to worry about exchange time at Mishima, although it should not take more time than 5 minutes.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks very much, Daniel-san. The part about pre-activating the JR Pass is most helpful.:)

hello,

I have a question connected with this topic.
I would like to reach Shuzenji with my JR Pass.
You wrote Odoriko is partly covered by JR Pass.
Is the Odoriko 115 from Shinagawa to Shuzenji free of charge?
If not, are there alternatives free of charge?

Thank you very much!

Hello there,

Shuzenji (Izu) unfortunately does not have a JR service. Therefor there's no other alternative. The only way you could save some money is to use local trains instead but these take a lot longer.
