questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

tokyo to kyoto

Tokyo to Kyoto

Heading to Kyoto from Tokyo and then returning. Will be staying closest to the Shinbashi Station. What is the best way to get to Kyoto that is included in the 7 day pass I purchased?
Thanks,
Aaron

Hi Aarom,

The best way to get to Kyoto is to take the Shinkansen (high speed bullet trains) directly from Tokyo station to Kyoto. From Shimbashi you can take the Yamanote line to Tokyo station.

Enjoy the ride,

It is possible to take the SHINKANSEN HIKARI from Kyoto back to Tokyo with the JapanRail pass? Do I have to reserve a seat ahead of time, or can I just show up an hour before?
Thanks,
Aaron

Hi Again!

Yes the Hikari is completely covered!

During normal days trains rarely sell out so you can show up 15min in advance, reserve a seat and hop on the train.
