Hello there, i am planning to visit Japan on February. Also, i plan to travel from Tokyo to Hakodate and i am a JR Pass holder. I have been confused with routes that i am studying on it. My questions are

  1. I have read many friends' journey from Tokyo to Hakodate that they took the sleeper train, akebono, from Ueno to Aomori. So i wonder how can i reserve this train if i am now outside Japan. Can i reserve it through JR East's reservation website? if i can but why i did not see or notice there are trains like this in the time table?

  2. If i travel by this train, how long does it take from the departure to destination?? do i have to transit??

  3. As i told that i am a JR Pass holder, does this train cost any Yen additionally?

  4. This is what i can retrieve from Hyperdia website, i wish to take this route, how can i find that sleeper train in Hyperdia??

--> 07:38 UENO [ Departure track No.20 ] [211 Min]
SHINKANSEN HAYATE 15

-->11:09 -->11:35 SHIN-AOMORI [ Arrival track No.11 ] [129 Min]
LTD. EXP SUPER HAKUCHO 15

-->13:44 HAKODATE

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi there,

Here's some general information on travel on the Akebono sleeper from a previous question by @benji.

Here are some specific answers to your questions:

I have read many friends' journey from Tokyo to Hakodate that they took the sleeper train, akebono, from Ueno to Aomori. So i wonder how can i reserve this train if i am now outside Japan. Can i reserve it through JR East's reservation website? if i can but why i did not see or notice there are trains like this in the time table?

The Akebono can only be reserved once you are in Japan at a JR ticket counter. In general the goron-to-shito (free carpeted areas for JR Pass holders) class will have space, however, as this is not guaranteed you should reserve your place on the Akebono as soon as you get to Japan.

If i travel by this train, how long does it take from the departure to destination?? do i have to transit??

Ueno to Aomori takes 12.6 hours on the Akebono. The Akebono is a direct train so there are no transits along the way.

As i told that i am a JR Pass holder, does this train cost any Yen additionally?

On the Akebono, the goron-to-shito carpeted areas and base travel costs are free. If you want to use a couchette or private room however, this will be an extra room/bed charge of ¥9,500.

This is what i can retrieve from Hyperdia website, i wish to take this route, how can i find that sleeper train in Hyperdia??

Here's a sample itienerary on the Akebono. You can see the full Akebono timetable online here.

Hope this helps you both!
