I have not bought a pass, but should I buy one for my last week in Japan. Plan on going to Takayama, and then will need to get to Narita. Will be 4 nights in tokyo and might use for a day trip. Or am I better off buying a different train pass.

Hello there,

A 7 day JR Pass would work well here. A normal return ticket Tokyo - Takayama is 29,420yen while the 7 day JR Pass is 29,110yen. You can also make use of the JR Pass to travel into Tokyo and to Narita Airport, in addition to a potential day trip. All this together should add up to some nice savings.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Well, the above includes the reserved seat charge as part of the normal fare, which is a freebie thrown in as part of the Pass. Nevertheless, including the Narita Express makes it worth it. That said, three days is really enough to see the best of Tokyo, and a day trip to somewhere like Nikko for a day would be well worth it as well as enhance the value of the Pass.
