ok guys i am planning to visit japan in september.
The cities im visiting are tokyo, osaka, nara, hiroshima, miyajima, kyoto, himeji.
in a three week span.
staying for:
8 days in tokyo
5 days osaka as base for visits to hiroshima, nara and miyajima
7 days in kyoto as base for visits to himeji or anywhere else worth visiting.( pls suggest)

will return to narita tokyo for flight home.

i wish to know if it is worth it for a 14 day jr pass or is it cheaper to travel otherwise?
if so, pls suggest.
Also i would like to know if a suica pass is still needed as i have heard that for tokyo and kyoto it is still necessary as jr trains cant cover everywhere, especially kyoto.
Thanks.

Hi there,

The 14 day JR Pass is by far the best option and also the only pass that covers the area you'll be travelling in. It covers travel between all the cities you wish to visit and will give you amazing flexibility to make day trips from Kyoto. My suggested side trips are: Kobe, Hikone, Kinosaki-Onsen - Wakayama - Nagoya and possibly Kurashiki.

For close by trips near Kyoto that are also reachable using the JR Pass, I recommend Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari and Uji.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

PS: a Suica pass is always handy to have.

Thanks for the reply:) Yes i have considered the prices and the 14 day pass is probably my best bet. I will get it on the day i leave tokyo. For the side trips i will do a bit of research and check them out. From what i am aware of kinosaki is a bit far and takes quite long to reach? I may have to stay for a night i guess. Anyways thanks.

Hi again,

Kinosaki is possible as a day trip from Kyoto, there are a couple of direct connections available each day and its a good way to experience Japanese bathing culture. Its even better to stay there a night and try a Japanese onsen though!
