I have the following itinerary planned:

14 Dec 2016: Tokyo to Kyoto
16 Dec 2016: Kyoto to Tokyo
20 Dec 2016: Tokyo to Karuizawa
24 Dec 2016: Karuizawa to Tokyo

Initially I thought of purchasing individual tickets.

Would it be better to purchase a 7-day JR Pass to cover 14 Dec to 20 Dec, and purchase a 1-way ticket from Karuizawa back to Tokyo on 24 Dec. I suppose JR pass can also be used when I am around Tokyo (16-19 Dec) to move around using JR trains.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi there,

Yes buying a 7 day JR Pass for to cover 14 Dec to 20 Dec would be cheaper than buying normal tickets for this route. Additionally the JR Pass is valid for local trains in Tokyo and to a limited extend in Kyoto, so you could make more savings there too.

The JR Network in Tokyo is very extensive and will get you to almost anywhere in the city.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
