questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

tokyo-kyoto-nagano-tokyo over 12 days

Tokyo-Kyoto-Nagano-Tokyo over 12 days

Hi there,
I will be traveling with 2 kids and my husband. Is it worth getting a JRP pass?

6th Tokyo to Kyoto
9th- Kyoto to Nagano then transfer to Nozawa Onsen ski resort
16th Nagano to Tokyo
18th Tokyo to Airport

Will it be worth buying the 14 day pass or just buy each train tkt? And what is the closest route from Kyoto to Nozawa Onsen? Do I have to travel from Kyoto train station to Nagano Station then bus?

And how much are the tkts per train ride if so?

Many thanks,
Susan

Hi Susan,

For this itinerary I would advise buying normal tickets as you fall just between a 7 and 14 day JR pass.

Here is the route from Kyoto - Nozawa Onsen. Alternatively, you may use an express bus from Nagano station.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR REPLY. I've just booked my flights from hk to tokyo and we land at 7pm on 10th Feb 2016. Can we get a late train in time from Tokyo to Kyoto on the Nozami? And if so, can you pls send the link to book it on as I can't seem to find the train times for Feb 2016? Or can i not book them yet? And should i also book my single journey from Kyoto to Nagano on the same link?

Thanks!

Suz

Hi again!

Tickets can only be purchased once you are in Japan and this can be done up to 30 days in advance of the journey. You can buy the tickets at Haneda once you land, no problem.

The same applies for Nagano :)
