HI there,

We are travelling in japan in September this year. After 10 days in Tokyo we are thinking of taking the train from Tokyo to Hiroshima - staying 2 nights then travelling to Osaka for a few days and then Kyoto for a few days, before heading back to Tokyo.

Do you think we need a rail pass ( we were considering a 14 day pass) or is it better to buy individual tickets?

There are 2 adults and 3 children under 11 travelling

Thanks,

Clare

Hi Clare,

Lets take a look at your basic JR ticket costs first:

  1. Tokyo > Hiroshima: ¥17850, (295mins, 894km)
  2. Hiroshima > Osaka: ¥10220, (109mins, 345km)
  3. Osaka > Kyoto: ¥540, (29mins, 42km)
  4. Kyoto > Tokyo: ¥13020, (161mins, 513km)

TOTAL: ¥41630 for 4 legs

The 7 day JR Pass costs ¥28,300 and 14 day costs ¥45,100. As you can see from your itinerary you'll certainly make good savings on your travel with a 7 day rail pass, but would need to do a little more JR travel to make purchasing a 14 day rail pass worthwhile - perhaps a day trip to Nikko from Tokyo?

You can look up train timetables and costs for all of your legs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for Japan Rail Pass holders through our video blog.

Hope this helps!
