questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

tokyo--kyoto--nara--kyoto--tokyo

Tokyo--Kyoto--Nara--Kyoto--Tokyo

Hi,

Wanted to know the difference between the regular and first class passes, does first class means its the green car and better for my travel dates? Is there a way to upgrade the JR Rail Pass so that we can take Nozomi? We are a family of 4, 2 adult, 7yr and 4yr. Please advise what is the best pass to purchase.

12/22---Landing Tokyo
12/27---Traveling to Kyoto
12/29---Possible day trip from Kyoto to Nara and Osaka
12/30---Leaving Kyoto back to Tokyo
12/31---Departing Tokyo

Cheers,
Karen

Hi Karen,

A Green (First class) pass could give you a better chance for seats, however a much better way to secure seats would be to reserve them on day of arrival in Japan. You may exchange the JR Pass right away even if you plan on using it on a later date. At this point, you can already make seat reservations and you will have ample time to do so the 22nd.

The JR Pass can't be used on the Nozomi, and the full fare will have to be paid when using the Nozomi train.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

So, does it mean with my itinerary like this JR Pass is still a better value than buying Nozomi train and JR East ticket separately?

Thanks,
Karen

Hi Karen,

Yes the JR Pass would work very well here. You could at the very least cover all your travel from the 27th -31st - including the day trips - and make good savings over normal tickets. At the same time, the JR East pass is valid for the area north of Tokyo and you'll be traveling south.

Hope this helps too!
