Hi there,

I've been researching the fastest ways to get from Tokyo to Takayama, then later from Takayama to Kyoto, then from Kyoto to Narita Airport using only the JR pass.

However, I've been getting some very long times (like 10 hours) when if I search it the opposite way it is much shorter (like 3 hours).

Would you be able to help me with the fastest routes with least changeovers (lots of luggage!)? Also how regular would these times be? We'd probably be looking at travelling in the morning/afternoon but escaping peak hour - any tips for the time?

Thanks a lot for your help

Cheers

Hi there,

I am certainly curious what you found, as the route from Tokyo - Takayama does not have to be complicated.

Here is an example route Tokyo - Takayama, with just 1 transfer.

and here is Takayama - Kyoto.

As for travelling to avoid rush hour, this is something to consider when travelling on local trains. The Shinkansen and other limited express trains are simply too expensive for normal commuting. Therefor you can just use them whenever you like!

Hope this helps!
