Hi all,

I will be heading to Tokyo (NRT) from 9 - 25 May (16 days). I am trying to figure out if it is cost-effective to purchase a 14 day pass to travel to the following places:

9 May - NRT to Tokyo
10 -12 May - At an event at Yamanakako Village located at Fuji Five Lakes and head to Osaka on 12 May (Recommended route was Hirano - Yamankako bus stop - Gotemba - JR to Osaka)
13 May - Osaka Sight seeing
14 May - Osaka Sight seeing (Aquarium + Bay Area)
15 - 21 May - Kyoto (Day trips to Nara/Hiroshima/Miyajima)
22- 24 May - Nikko (Or skip Nikko and extend in Kyoto). Depart to Tokyo on 24 May overnight
25 May - Depart NRT

I have been to Tokyo before hence wouldnt be spending much time there.

Is getting a JR pass worth it for the above schedule?

I understand that I cant use JR pass in Kyoto.

Hi there,

I made a little overview of ticket prices to see if a JR-Pass would be suitable for your itinerary.

Narita Airport --> Tokyo 2,740 (not included in total as the JR-Pass is 14 days)
Gotemba --> Osaka ¥ 12,270
Osaka --> Kyoto 540
Kyoto Hiroshima ¥ 10,790 x 2 = 21,580
Hiroshima Miyajima 940
Kyoto Nara 1380
Kyoto --> Nikko ¥ 17,710
Nikko --> Narita airport ¥ 8,460

For a total of ¥ 64,240, the 14Day JR-Pass is ¥ 45,300 so you could at least save ¥ 16,400. This itinerary includes a visit to Nikko.

In case you would not go to Nikko:
Narita Airport --> Tokyo ¥ 2,740 (not included in total as the JR-Pass is 14 days)
Gotemba --> Osaka ¥ 12,270
Osaka --> Kyoto 540
Kyoto Hiroshima ¥ 10,790 x 2 = ¥ 21,580
Hiroshima Miyajima ¥ 940
Kyoto Nara ¥ 1380
Kyoto --> Narita Airport ¥ 15,930

For a total of ¥ 54,000. saving you ¥ 6,160 which is still very decent. So either way I think it would be worth getting a JR-Pass. I think it really is a fine trip you will be making, so enjoy every moment of it!

Hope this helps,
Daniel

PS: I left out the Narita Express of Narita Airport to Tokyo on day one as this would not fall into the 14-days of use. What you could do is take the [Suica + N'EX] package to get to Tokyo and from when you go to Fuji 5 lakes by bus.
