Hi there,

Need your help and advice. The following is my itinerary.

Day 1 12 Nov 1N - Tokyo
Day 2 13 Nov 1N - Tokyo
Day 3 14 Nov 1N - Tokyo
Day 4 15 Nov 1N – Nikko
Day 5 16 Nov 1N – Nikko
Day 6 17 Nov 1N - Takayama and Japan Alps
Day 7 18 Nov 1N - Takayama
Day 8 19 Nov 1N - Kyoto
Day 9 20 Nov 1N - Kyoto
Day 10 21 Nov 1N – Kyoto
22 Nov – check out Kyoto to Narita Airport

Question 1: I am travelling 10 days, based on my itinerary should i get 7 days pass and activiate on Day 4 15 Nov when i am travelling to Nikko? But it means it will end on 21 Nov and i will need to pay for the train from Kyoto to Narita airport?

Question 2: How to i get from Nikko to Takayama? Tried surfing around but cannot find good answers.

Question 3: How to i get from Takayama to Kyoto?

Many thanks!

Hi there,

Q1.) I would advise buying normal tickets for travel between Tokyo - Nikko (be sure to use local JR trains or the Tobu rail to save money) then use your JR Pass for Nov 16th - 22nd as traveling back to Narita Airport from Kyoto is the most expensive part of your journey. Or if you really want to save money make a day trip from Tokyo to Nikko on the 16th and return to Tokyo on the same day. This will also save you travel time the next day to Takayama.

Q2.) Here is the route Nikko - Takayama, covered by the JR Pass.

Q3.) Takayama - Kyoto can be found here.

Hope this helps!

HI Daniel,

Thank you very much for answering so quickly. It is very helpful.

I had booked the hotels for the above dates as Nov is very popular period to travel to Japan.

May i trouble you with some more queries please?

Q1.) The routes you provide for Q2 and Q3 are all covered by JR pass?

Q2.) The schedule and timing shown on HyderDia does not change in Nov?

Q3) Is it more worthwhle to just buy 14 days (cover the whole trip) and use it since Day 1 for us to take train from Narita to Tokyo as well as?

Many thanks!

Hi there,

Glad to hear you found it useful, of course you can ask more questions!

All routes linked are covered by the JR Pass. Timings in Hyperdia will most likely remain unchanged. You can of course search for November if you want to be sure :) I've already filled in the route, so just adjust the date/time at the bottom of the page to your liking.

As for the JR Pass, I would advise a normal 7 day JR Pass and buy local tickets to Nikko on the first day. This would be the best option in terms of budget.

See this page for details on how to access Nikko without the JR Pass.

Also be sure to exchange your voucher for the actual JR Pass before traveling to Nikko, as you can't do so there.

Hope this helps too!
