Hi,

I'd like some advice on whether getting the JR pass would make sense for two adults on this itinerary:

27 October (night) - Landing in Haneda to Higashimonzen Station
28 October - Kamikochi
30 October - Kamikochi - Osaka
30 October - Osaka to Kyoto
1 Nov - Kyoto to Tokyo
5 Nov - Ookobu station - Haneda

I was just wondering if it would make sense to buy the JR pass or to buy individually, cos i understand that the Kamikochi area is not covered by the JR pass. I'm not too sure when i should activate my JR pass to get the best value for it as well. Please advise. Thank you so much.

Hi there,

Yes, I think it would make sense to use a 7 day JR Pass. You can use the JR Pass to travel from Tokyo - Matsumoto, however from there a Non-JR bus is required for the last part to Kamikochi. With all other travel in, you can still make great savings compared to normal tickets.

Hope you find this helpful,
Daniel

Hi Daniel-san,

Thank you so much for your reply. It is very helpful.

May I enquire if it would make sense to do the following:
Scenario A
(1) Activate my JR pass on the 27th october so that I can use it to get my accommodation on the first night? I will only be landing around 10 plus at night so I don't know if it's worth it to activate it then. (2) If I were to activate my JR pass on the 27th nov (which will presumably expire on the 2 nov), would it then be worth it to purchase a 3-day tokyo pass to travel around tokyo and to get to the airport on the last day? or would the 3 day tokyo pass not be worth it?

Scenario B
My other alternative (if i didn't purchase the tokyo pass) would be to pay the individual fare to get from the haneda to my accommodation on the first night in tokyo, and then activate my JR pass on 28th october. once the JR pass expires on the 3 nov, then I will pay individual fares to get around tokyo on the last two days.

please advise which scenario is more worth it. Thank you so much for your help!!! :)

Hi again,

A would simply not work, as the exchange station will already be closed by 10 pm at Haneda or Narita Airport.

Also in a general sense, I do think that option B would be better in any event.

Hope this helps to :)
Daniel
