Our itinerary for Japan (May 19 - June 2) includes 5 nights in Tokyo (May 19-24); then 3 nights in Hakone (May 24-27); 4 nights in Kyoto (May 27-31) and finally 2 nights in Hiroshima (May 31 -June 2). Our train travel will be Tokyo to Hakone; Hakone to Kyoto; and finally Kyoto to Hiroshima. We fly out of Hiroshima back to Tokyo before heading back home.

It does not make sense to purchase a 14 day JR Pass since the first 5 days we will be in Tokyo. The question: does a 7 day JR Pass make sense? If the pass is a good option, we would consider commencing the pass on May 26 the day before we head off to Kyoto from Hakone and expire after June 1st.

Hello there,

I checked the route to see if a JR Pass would be helpful. The most expancive routes would be Hakone (Odawara station) ¥ 13,600 - Kyoto and Kyoto - Hiroshima ¥ 11,090. Together these routes are below the price of a 7 day JR Pass (¥ 29,110). So it's better to buy normal tickets using for this route.

The JR Pass would have been a very good option though, if you used the Shinkansen to return to Tokyo.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Daniel,
Thank you for your response. If we include the use of the pass for the ferry to Miyajima Island and a day trip to Himeji Castle from Kyoto, would this now make sense to have a pass. If the pass makes sense, should we consider the "green' pass?

Hello again,

The price difference is around 4,500yen. So a JR Pass be a good option if you can cover that amount.

Kyoto - Himeji using the Shinkansen is ¥ 5,590/one way. So a JR Pass would work veery well here. In addition the ferry to Miyajima is also covered.

A Green Class pass is very nice if you want to extra comfort and quiet it offers. Ordinary class however is also good and is fine for most travelers.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
