questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

to rent a car or to get rail pass?

To rent a car or to get rail pass?

Hello!

My family of 5 adults and 1 child are traveling this coming December 14-23rd. Our proposed itinerary as follows:
Nagoya-Osaka-Kobe-Nara-Mt Fuji-Nagoya.

  1. Is it more worthwhile to rent a car or buy the rail pass?
  2. As the duration of the trip is 9 days (23rd morning flight), is there any way to extend the 7-day rail pass?

Thank you!

Hi there,

Nagoya lies central when it comes to visiting the other places planned in your itinerary. You could either use a car or rail to explore Japan from there. If you go by rail, buy normal tickets as the price of normal tickets is below the price of normal tickets in your itinerary. You can however consider a JR Pass if you where to include for instance Tokyo in your itinerary. This because Fuji is rarely seen in winter and may be hiding behind clouds.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

PS: it is not possible extend the validity period of the JR Pass.

Hi Daniel-san

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I'm under the impression that winter is the best time to catch Fuji due to the low humidity levels but this is not the main issue here :)

So do you mean it's better for us not to buy the JR pass if we are not renting a car? As they don't cover local trains, buses etc?

Thank you.

Hi Lian-Ian,

What I mend was that in your itinerary normal tickets are below the cost of a JR Pass, so you would not make savings buying a JR Pass.

As for Fuji, you can get indeed get the most beautiful and crisp photo shot of Fuji in Winter. At the same time, Fuji is clouded more often.

Hope this helps too,
Daniel
