Time Needed to get from Fukuoka airport to Hakata Station

Hi!

We are arriving around 18:00 at Fukuoka and would like to stay with our friends in Nagoya that night. Looking at Hyperdia there are a few trains that leave that evening, but it seems the latest leaves at 20:00. Do you think that we can get through customs, travel to Hakata station, exchange our order for the JR pass in time to make the last train, or should we plan to stay the night?

The JR pass is not valid on the Nozomi, so we will need to change trains en route to Nagoya, correct?

Thanks!

Hi there,

Fukuoka is a fairly quiet airport, so I'd predict you'll be through customs within an hour of landing. The airport is only 6 mins from Hakata Station on the subway (sample itinerary), and the JR ticket offices at Hakata are open for activating JR Passes right up until 23:00 so you should be able to get to the platform ready to board a bullet within 2 hours of landing. You are correct that you'll need to change trains en route up to Nagoya and will not be able to use the Nozomi or Mizuho class bullets.

I've just checked the timetables, and it seems the last valid shinkansen bullet up to Nagoya leaves Hakata at 18:38, which will be too late for you. The schedule could be different on the day you choose to travel but it's worth double checking before you finalise your plans (I checked the trains for today and tomorrow, both had the last trains with connections to Nagoya leaving at 18:38, getting you into Nagoya at 22:35).

If you do stay a night in Fukuoka, I highly recommend the Plaza Hotel Tenjin (& tripadvisor) for it's good location (daimyo), style and price.

Hope this helps!

Thank you!

We're arriving on Aug 24, and I thought I saw some trains leaving later, but I just realized that they do leave later, but then we get stuck in Osaka overnight. In case something changes, what happens if we reserve a seat on a train, but miss the train? Are we charged a fee or can we just use that to get our replacement tickets?

Thanks for your help!

Hi there,

If you reserve seats and miss your train with a JR Pass there are no charges. If you want to reserve another seat all you need to do is visit the ticket office and book another :)

Hope this helps!
