I plan to travel from Takayama to Kanazawa and stay for 2 nights. I will leave Kanazawa on Ltd Express Shiragasi to arrive at Hikone for 1 night and then do a day trip to Kyoto the following day. Will the 5 day pass cover the whole journey from Takayama to Hikone and also the return day trip from Hikone to Kyoto and back. Can the pass be used anywhere else in Kyoto. if the activation starts on 18 November is the pass valid until midnight of 22 nd November? Thank you.

Hi there,

The Hokuriku pass does not cover the full way to Hikone as far as I could determine. Note that there different Hokuriku packages are available. Could you give me a link to the one you are referring to?

The pass is not valid for local travel in Kyoto.

All passes in Japan are counted in full days, so the pass would indeed expire at the 22nd if you activate it on the 18th.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

The pass is Takayama Hokuriku area tourist rail pass for 5 days. I intend to start using it when I leave TAKAYAMA on 18 Nov. Information from Japan-Guide.com seems to indicate that the pass is also valid for bus travel from Takayama to Kanazawa. In that case can I also stop at Shirakawago and visit the heritage village before I continue the journey to Kanazawa. I leave Kanazawa on 20 nov for Hikone. If the pass is valid for travel up to Kyoto, can I use the pass to travel at least up to Maibara Station. I will travel from Maibara to Hikone at my own cost. On 21 nov, I will continue my journey to Kyoto via Maibara Station and return to Hikone where I have already book my hotel. On 22 nov I will travel to Odawara. The 5 day pass is 10500 yen and I will appreciate if you can advise whether it is worthwhile to buy the pass before my arrival at Nagoya on 15 nov.

Hi there,

It does offer good savings over normal tickets and it will help you make savings for sure. However I am not sure if it coves all the way to Hikone.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

I need your confirmation whether the pass allow me to ride on another ltd express train "Shirasagi" instead of "Thunderbird" which will go directly to Kyoto . The reason why I choose Shirasagi is because I want to stopover at Maibara Station.

Can I still use the pass to travel to Kyoto the next day taking the JR special rapid service and return to Maibara on the same day before midnight i.e. 5th day of the pass. I am trying to justify the worthiness of the 5 day pass and need your help. If it is confirm that I can use the pass for all these journey the pass would have save me 1200 yen and for 4 people traveling, the savings is substantial.
Takayama to Shirakawago by Nohi bus : 2470 yen
Shirakawago to Kanazawa by Nohi bus : 1850 yen
Kanazawa to Maibara by Shirasagi : 5180 yen
Maibara to Kyoto (return trip) : 1140 + 1140 yen
Total 11,780 yen

Hi again!

Sorry without a link to the package you are talking about I can't confirm the coverage. I tried to look for you but found 3 different Hokuriku area packages.

I'd be more than happy to check it if you give me a link to the pass you want to use.
