Me and my family will be visiting Japan for the first time in a few weeks for a 12 day trip. Should I buy the JR pass?
We will be arriving in Osaka , and will be leaving Japan from Osaka again, and we plan to stay as follows:

-Osaka 3 nights -Tokyo 7 nights -Osaka 2 nights

Should we buy the JR pass ?

Thank you
Tienpop

Hi Tienpop,

For your current itinerary it would be best to buy normal tickets as you travel. A 7 day JR Pass could be useful if used to cover the return Tokyo Osaka. However it would expire before making the return back, since you effectively take 8 days.

If plans change and you would make the return in time, then the JR Pass is a very interesting option.

Hi,
If we could change our plans and spend one day less in Tokyo, would it give us more option to visit places of interest and using the 7 days JR pass more extensively? Are we able to use this pass for train and transportation in Tokyo?

And maybe it be wise by getting the Icoca & Haruka package for traveling around Osaka as well.
Or is there any other option?

Hi again!

Yes with a day less in Tokyo a 7 day JR Pass could be a very nice option. This because the pass itself is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Osaka using the Shinkansen (bullet train). From there any additional travel you do with it basically is what you save. For instance local travel on the JR network in Tokyo. Since you do get unlimited travel with it, it is very nice to make a day trip a bit further away from Tokyo as well. Think about Nikko or the Bid Buddha near Kamakura.

The Icoca + Haruka is a pretty nice deal, there are however other budget options as well.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
