Hi,

I will be travelling in Japan for 12 days. I want to know whether I should purchase a 7-day or 14-day Japan rail pass and if I should get other passes. Roughly I plan to go to these few areas

Day1 - Tokyo (Fly-in)
Day2 - Tokyo
Day3 - Takayama
Day4 - Takayama/Kanazawa
Day5 - Kyoto
Day6 - Kyoto
Day7 - Kyoto
Day8 - Hakone
Day9 - Hakone
Day10 - Tokyo
Day11 - Tokyo
Day12 - Tokyo (Fly-out)

My plan is to start using Japan rail pass from Day 3 to travel to Takayama because I read online that it's not worthwhile to use Japan rail pass in Tokyo area. Please advice if there are better alternatives.

Thank you.

Regards,
Stephen

Hello there,

I'd would also advise a 7 day JR Pass for this itinerary. You can make the best savings by using it from Day 3 to day 9 - this way you can cover, the otherwise pricey, bullet train tickets.

I would recommend traveling to Odawara station for Hakone. This station gives the easiest access around the area and you may purchase a Hakone Free Pass here and use it to explore the area and return to Tokyo.

Here's a full list of discount tickets in Tokyo.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
