We are a senior couple travelling in Japan and wish to go from Sapporo to Toyama leaving on 30 October to experience the Alpine Route.
Can you advise the most reasonable way to do this by rail? We can make a stop half way if necessary. We will have a three week JRPass.
After we complete the route which town would be best to stay in that night?
Many thanks
Sapporo to Toyama
Hi there,
Traveling from Sapporo to Toyama is a great trip to make, first you travel between Sapporo - Hakodate past the Hokkaido coastline with wonderful views on the way. At Shin-Hakodate you can transfer to the newest H5 Hokkaido Shinkansen to Tokyo or Omiya stations. From there you can use the newly introduced Hokuriku Shinkansen to Toyama.
The trip is very nice to make but still a massive 10 hours of straight train travel and a stop or two on the way are well recommended. I think Tokyo or Sendai would be the best stops when looking at the route. Other nice places to stop at on the route are Hakodate, Hirosaki (involves a small de-tour), Matsushima and Nagano.
The route is fully covered by the JR Pass and looks like this <--Clicky clicky!
Hope this helps,
Daniel
Thankyou Daniel I will follow this advice
