Reserved Seating & General Airport Transfer Questions

We (9 people) are planning our ski trip for January 2017. We need to check into our Shiga Kogen accommodation on 9 January. We are flying via Taipei and have a choice of arriving at Narita at 1pm or Haneda at 11:15am which would be the best option for us considering we will be taking a Shinkansen to Nagano, is Haneda closer to Tokyo station and in affect be a shorter distance?
Also as we cannot reserve our seating on the train, would we need to worry about missing out on a seat in unreserved cabins? 9 January is a public holiday in Japan is there a chance we could be stranded in Tokyo?
Please note - we will be using a 5 day JR East Pass for the Nagano area.

Hi there,

Haneda and Narita both have pro's and con's. Narita Airport is further away from Tokyo but has a direct train connection using the Narita Express (about 90 min). While Haneda is closer but has a transfer at Hamamatsucho station (45min to Tokyo station). Given that 11:45 is earlier, I would go for that option.

There are plenty of trains going to Nagano and I don't think you have to worry about seating on the 9th of January.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
