I will be visiting Japan on 26 March 2014 until 2 April. My point of entry and departure is Kansai Airport but wish to see the above places.

Can you please suggest my itinerary if I utilise all of my trips using 7day Japan Rail Pass and if possible suggest Budget accommodations such as international hostels near the train stations of these places? If possible I wish to travel to and from Tokyo in different routes and want to see Mt. Fuji.

I would appreciate very much if you can recommend places or tourist spots of the above places as well.

I know this will be a hectic trip but I am used to this kind of trips stopping over at least one day per place.

Will I be able to make enquiries in any train station personnel in English? I do not speak and understand Japanese.

Hi there!

Sorry for the late replay, I got a little stuck in travel myself. Now, let's have a look at your itinerary! First let me say that it looks very doable to me in the given amount of time and I am sure that you will be able to visit all places, be it for a single day.

What I would recommend doing is booking a hostel in either Osaka or Kyoto and make day trips from there in Kansai (the area where Osaka, Kobe, Nara and Kyoto are located). For instance Osaka is only 30 minutes away by train from Kyoto and you can reach Nara and Kobe within an hour. You could even visit Hiroshima as a day trip which is a little under 2 hours away from Kyoto by Shinkansen.

What I would recommend seeing for sure is Kyomizu-dera and Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, visit Shinsai bashi and Namba in Osaka and see the peace museum and memorial in Hiroshima.

It is hard to recommend places to stay but K's House near Kyoto is pretty awesome and well located if you plan on making day trips from Kyoto station.

As for the last part to Tokyo - there's just one Shinkansen line between Kyoto and Osaka but you can see Fuji from it and even make a stop on the way to get a little closer if you wish, station's that offer a great view on Fuji are Mishima and Shin-Fuji. All major stations in Japan have a special JR desk with English speaking staff and can help you out with anything related to train travel, there are also Tourist information places in every station who has English staff for anything else.

I hope this helps!

Hi Again!

Of course not! That's why I am here :)

As for the JR Pass validity: The Pass is valid for 7 consecutive days and the first day of use is counted as a full day. So for instance if you activate it on March 26th, than it will be valid until the end of April 1st 23.59.

Hi Again!

1.) Take the bullet train from Nagoya to Kyoto. From Kyoto station transfer to the Kyoto Bus and take bus nr 100 or 206 to Higashiyama. From here ask for a map from your accommodation to do the last part on foot.

2.) Return to Kyoto station and take the Nara line to Nara station. You can walk from here to your Ryokan, however I would ask the tourist information at the station for directions.

3.) From Takamado (Nara) to Kobe, return to Nara station and take the JR Yamatoji Line Regional Rapid Service to Osaka from Osaka take the JR Special Rapid Service to Sannomiya (main station for Kobe) your hotel is 5-10 minutes away on foot.

4.) From Sannomiya travel to Shin-Kobe, the Shinkansen station for Kobe, from here you can take the bullet train to Hiroshima. From Hiroshima station take a local tram to Hondori, your hotel is just around the corner.

5 & 6.) Take the tram back to Hiroshima station and take the bullet train to Shin-Osaka, from Shin-Osaka take the Haruka express to Kansai Airport. You can take a local train back to Izumisano from Kansai Airport (2 stops away), the next morning just take a local train back to Kansai Airport.

Hope this helps!

Hi there!

For travel from Kansai Airport - Kyoto take the Haruka Express. This is a direct train service.

On to Nara, the town is rather small and you can visit all these places on foot within half a day or so. You can use the JR Pass both for travel to Nara and Kobe.

From Kobe - Hiroshima, first travel to Shin-Kobe station, here you can board the Shinkansen to Hiroshima station. From there you can take local transport to your hotel.

To return to Osaka(Umeda), first take the Shinkansen from Hiroshima to Shin-Osaka and use local trains from there to Osaka station. You can walk from here to your hotel. All places you wish to visit in Osaka are covered with the JR Pass.

Have a great trip!
Daniel
