Please advise Hiroshima to Nagasaki

We are a family of 4, with 2 adults and two children, ages 7 and 3. We are trying to decide if the JRPass is a good deal or if it is better to just pay as we go. We are easily confused by the train, subway, bullet train maps and we think that if the JRPass would make our trip much easier, we may just go with purchasing it. We arrive on January 23rd at Fukuoka airport and we understand that we must use the airport subway to get to Hakata where we will get on a train or bullet train to Hiroshima. We will stay in Hiroshima two nights, then we need a train to Nagasaki, where we will stay two nights. We will then take a train from Nagasaki back to the Fukuoka airport, departing in the evening. Can anyone help us decide or plan the best, easiest route for us? I have researched quite a bit but I feel unsure of how to best go about planning our train travel. Thank you!

Hello there,

Here's a quick overview of ticket prices (adult):

Hakata - Hiroshima (return) ¥ 17,480
Hakata - Nagasaki (return) ¥ 9,000

For a total of ¥ 26,480, the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110. So right now if would be better to buy normal tickets. At the same time, the JR Pass could quickly help you make savings will a little bit more travel.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you, Daniel-san for your reply. I might go ahead and get the JRPass because it will cover the Miyajima ferry and any potential mistakes we make, such as taking the wrong train. I watched a video of how to use the pass, and I got the sense that it might make it easier for us to get through the train stations, because we stand around staring and overwhelmed at all the options on the automatic ticket machines.

True, just a little travel would make the JR Pass would also help you make savings over normal tickets.

If you have some free time, consider making a visit to Yufuin. It's a very nice experience.
