Hi Ralph, assuming you're doing a return to Osaka, here are some sample routes and costs for you:

  1. Osaka > Hakuba: ¥11,060 (364mins, 438km)
  2. Hakuba > Osaka: ¥11,060 (313mins, 438km)

JR ticket cost: ¥22,120 for 2 legs

You can reserve seats for free on these trains by presenting your JR Pass at the ticket office anytime before departure.

You can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for JR Pass holders through our video blog.

Hope this helps!

Hi Maria, thanks for your reply and it has all the informaion I need, However am I wrong in assuming my JR Pass covers all costs including reservations?
From Hakuba / Nagano where do I go to see the snow monkeys?
Regards, Ralph.

Hi there! The JR Pass will cover all your listed travel including reservations so you should be all set!

Most people go to see the snow monkeys in Jigokudani, which is best reached by non-JR Nagano train to Yudanaka. Note that Nagano is actually pretty far to reach by train from Hakuba as it is in another valley of the alps you have to go down and then back in again. Here's a sample itinerary from Hakuba to Yudanaka for you.

Hope this helps!
