questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

nex

NEX

Hi, We are a group of 8, inc 1 child 3yr+.
As mentioned in the web, by having JR pass we can ride NEX for free.
We are staying for 10days.
If we only buy the JR pass for 7days, can we reserve the NEX for our time arrive (dec 17) and use it again on out last day (dec27)?

For child below 6 is free and no seat allocated.
So, everytime i'm going to take on the JR, should i report? Or just bring my child along?

We landed around 4pm at narita. Is it recommended if we go direct to Osaka - spend time there and back to Tokyo after few days? Or better we spend a night at Tokyo first?

Hi Sopia,

The JR Pass is only valid for its validity duration. This will likely mean that you can use the JR Pass on the Narita Express 1 way and will have to purchase a normal ticket for the other day.

4pm is a bit late to travel on to Osaka. It's at least 5 more hours of travel, after clearing customers and luggage collection. I would start in Tokyo and travel on to Osaka at a later date.

For your child, you can just board the train but keep in mind that he/she is not entitled to a seat and you may have to keep your child on your lap if the train is busy. You can buy a normal child ticket, if you want to secure seating.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel, thank you for the answer.
have few question to ask, hope you don't mind.

() from the forum, it's advise that for group departure, we better make a reservation. let say to Osaka [return]. can we do the online reservation? () for all reservation; can we pick up the ticket once we arrive at Narita airport? even though we only will go to Osaka, maybe 2-3days after we arrived at tokyo () there's a ski resort that we can visit from Tokyo, Gala Yuzawa, and we can use shinkansen. Is it covered by JR Pass? and should we make the reservation as well? () for Tokyo sightseeing - is it advise to use like Hop-on Hop-off service? or we better get the suica card as you mention after our 7days JR pass expired.

thanks,
sopia

Hello there,

Reservations can be made right away at Narita Airport, sometimes it's very busy in Narita, in that case you can use any other ticket window at any JR station.

For local travel, it really depends on what you will want to see and do. Generally a day ticket or using Suica are both save options.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
