Good Day
We are arriving at Narita on the evening of 27th August and flying out 30th, but staying overnight on 29th at Narita again as we have an early flight. We would like to travel to Kyoto on the night of the 27th, and return on 29th. I have spent a long time trying to book on the Narita Express and connect to the Shinkansen to Kyoto, but can not find how to do it. Also, can not figure out if the costs for 2 adults on two trips on both trains is cheaper than buying a 7 day rail pass, which seems a waste as we are only there for 3 days. Any advise would be very welcome.

Hi there,

You can purchase the train tickets once you land in Japan, it is not possible to do so outside of Japan.

From Narita take the Narita Express to Tokyo and the Shinkansen from there to Kyoto. A return Narita Airport - Kyoto is 33,560yen, compared to the price of a 7 day JR Pass which is 29,100yen. So buying a JR Pass is the better option. You can also use the JR Pass for local travel in many cases, adding even more.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
