Narita Airport to Osaka

Hello all,

Would really appreciate some help on this. I'll be arriving in Tokyo, Narita at 8pm on Saturday 20 Feb, and have plans to meet my friends who are arriving in Osaka.

I am purchasing a 7-day JR pass but have some issues finding out the train schedules.

I understand I have to take the Narita Express to Tokyo and switch to another train to Shin-Osaka. I'm just wondering with my timeline, am I able to make it to Osaka by midnight?

If its not possible, are there also alternatives i.e. Overnight trains that are covered under JR pass which I can take and arrive in Osaka in the morning 7am?

Thank you all in advance! :)

Hello there,

I am afraid that you'll not be able to travel on to Osaka by rail if you arrive at Narita Airport at 8 pm. Its at least an 5 hour journey and trains generally stop service around midnight. My best advise would be to stay the night near Narita or in Tokyo and travel on the following morning to Osaka.

The route by train from Narita airport to Osaka is as follows: Take the Narita Express from Narita to Tokyo station, there transfer to the Shinkansen bullet trains and head to Shin-Osaka, from there local trains run throughout Osaka.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel-san!

Alternatively, are there any midnight trains that run from Tokyo to Osaka? (doesn't have to be included under JR pass), this is hopefully so I can save a night's accommodation and arrive in Osaka in the morning instead.

Do hope to hear from you soon!
Cameron

Hello Cameron,

There are no night trains at all between Tokyo and Osaka. The only (somewhat crazy idea) I could come up with is use the Sunrise express from Tokyo to Himeji and then a normal train from there to Osaka. You would arrive around 7 am in Osaka but the cost may be quite high and I still don't know if you'll be in time at 10 pm on Tokyo station for its departure.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
