Hi There!

Need some advice on travel using Japan Rail Pass.

8days 7nights, 1st May - 8 May

We will be arriving early in Narita as early as 8am on Day 1 and plan to head over to Kyoto for 3 days.

On day 4, we plan to drop by Hakone for the day then head back to Tokyo till day 8 then use the train to Narita.

Was wondering if the JR-Pass will take us to al this destination and will there be savings using the JR Pass?

Regards
Shannon

Hi Shannon,

The JR Pass will bring you to all your planned destinations and I think that are some good savings to be had as well!

Using the JR Pass you'd make the following in savings.
Narita Airport - Kyoto ¥ 16,330
Kyoto - Hakone (Odawara station) ¥ 11,950
Hakone (Odawara) - Tokyo ¥ 3,130

For a total of ¥ 31,410 or ¥ 3,110 in savings as the 7 Day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300. Additionally the JR Pass is also valid for travel around Tokyo on the JR, making for even more possible savings.

Note that the JR Pass covers travel to Hakone, you can use the Shinkansen to Odawara station which makes for a good base to explore the area, however note that local travel within Hakone is run by different companies other than JR who unfortunately do not accept the JR Pass.

I hope this helps!

Daniel,

Thank you so much for your quick response and great to see savings with the 7 day JR Pass.

So you are saying from Odawara to Hakone, I will be required to use another local travel company? Any idea which company and how much will it cost?

Regards
Shannon

Hi Again!

Travel cost in around Hakone is mostly run by Odakyu among about companies. Ticket prices generally are a couple hundred yen, depending on distance and travel method. Consider a Hakone Free Pass if you plan to travel much around the area.

Also HERE is a great map on how to get around Hakone.

I hope this helps too :)

Hi Daniel-San,

Since I'll be arriving during the golden week, do you think its better to purchase the tickets in advance?

How much will it cost from Toyko - Narita Airport?

Hi Shannon,

Yes it is better to buy tickets in advance if you can - Golden Week can get pretty busy.

A ticket Tokyo - Narita is ¥ 3,140 using the Narita Express or ¥ 1,280 using local rail travel.

Daniel
