We arrive in Nagoya and would like to spend the night there. Next day, leave for Osaka for a few nights, then to Kyoto for a few nights then back to Nagoya.

What is the best mode of transport and costs savings?

Hello there,

The distance between Nagoya and Osaka is not high in terms of distance or travel costs and my advice would be to just buy normal tickets. The same applies for Osaka - Kyoto and Kyoto - Nagoya.

You could also look at using an express bus as prices are generally somewhat lower than the Shinkansen. However the travel time is at least double.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much. Can we please get some advise.

1) Which is a better route: Nagoya-Kyoto-Osaka-Nagoya or Nagoya-Osaka-Kyoto-Nagoya

2) How about going to Tokyo, where should we leave from please

3) Can we purchase normal tickets in advance online and can you please let us know price for us to work out budgets.

4) When you say, normal tickets is that referring to the normal JR Line tickets?

Thank you.

Hello again,

1.) Have a look at this map, I think it will be a great help. As you can see the route is almost the same, so the order of the route does not matter.

2.) You can take the Shinkansen directly from Nagoya station to Tokyo station.

3.) You can purchase tickets once you are in Japan at any JR Station, only reservations are unfortunately not possible unless you speak Japanese. The price for a one way ticket Nagoya - Osaka is about ¥ 6,150, Osaka - Kyoto ¥ 560 and Kyoto - Osaka ¥ 5,390. You can check ticket prices yourself using Hyperdia.

4.) Yes :)

Understanding the different train lines and various passes in Japan

Hi Daniel,

We’ve now confirmed our itinerary as follows:

Day 1:
Nagoya Chubu International airport, head straight to Yamabe Ryokan at Tenri Nara Station.
Visit Nara Deer Park, Isuien Garden, Todaiji Temple and Higashimuki shopping arcade and Naramachi-no Machiya

Day 2:
Train from Tenri Nara Station to central Kyoto (day trip)

Day 3:
Train from Tenri Nara Station to CaminoRo Guesthouse, Mikuni Station Osaka

Day 4 and Day 5:
Stay and travel around in Osaka

Day 6:
Train from CaminoRo Guesthouse, Mikuni Station to Hotel MyStays, Nagoya Sakae Station

Day 7:
Hotel MyStays, Nagoya Sakae Station to Chubu International Airport.

Based on our plan above, can you please advise which is the best train pass to buy apart from JR Pass. Would it be the Kansai Pass or the Kintetsu Pass?

Can you also please advise us cost estimate for budgeting purposes? Thank you.

Hello Karen,

I noticed that you also posted a new question regarding the above, I've answered your question here to keep it all in one topic.

Here's a quick run down of approximate ticket prices.

Nagoya Airport - Nara ¥ 7,790 (I would not find Tenri Nara station but the price should not differ much)

Nara - Kyoto ¥ 730 for once way.

Nara - Osaka ¥ 800 for once way.

Osaka - Nagoya ¥ 6,560

Nagoya - Chubu Int. ¥ 1,340

Note that these are all proximate prices and could differ by a couple hundred yen.

Hope this helps!

Dear Daniel,

Thanks so much. In that case, would it be cheaper if we purchase either the Kintetsu Pass or Kansai Pass, please? Or would you recommend us to just purchase single tickets.

Hi Karen,

That would depend on how you wish to travel, stick to normal tickets if you want to use the Shinkansen. Otherwise you could use a Kintetsu pass and travel using the Kintetsu lines.

Hope this helps too :)
