After reserving a seat and train number on the shinkansen and if I miss the train, what happens?
Can I board the next train and sit in a unreserved seat or I have to reserve again?

Hi there,
You can always board the next train and use a non-reserved seat, this is the official rule as well.
Generally JR Staff will be flexible with this and allow you to make a reservation for the next train free of charge.
