questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

morning pass activation

Morning Pass Activation

I am planning to visit Tokyo for a few days, then use the rail pass to travel to other areas. How early in the morning can I activate the pass at the Tokyo station? Or, can I have the pass validated a day or two before but not have the 7-day time activate until my first rail trip?

I am planning to depart Tokyo early morning on Monday, April 27 to travel to Onomichi and spend the day there. I will return to Kyoto late evening. I will not return to Tokyo until Saturday or Sunday, May 2 or 3.

Hello there,

A full list of stations and exchange times can be found here.

You can also activate the JR Pass beforehand and select a first day of use - up to 30 days in the future. I would go for this option as you can go to an exchange station at your own leisure and exchange the JR Pass, you can even make seat reservations at that time for your travel to Onomichi.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

PS: Something you won't find in the tourist books but what I would recommend is trying out the local Ramen style

Thanks again for your help. BTW-are you a mind-reader? I've been enjoying hunting out Ramen restaurants here in NYC for months. Now I have to seek out the regional varieties in Japan! :)

Hi again!

I am not a mind reader but the first thing that came to mind when reading Onomichi was the local Ramen (I'm a bit of a fan).

Btw you know that they say about great minds ;)
