Hello,

I'm going to be traveling with friends through Japan in September. We are arriving in Hiroshima from Tokyo, but spending the night in Miyajima. The following day we'd like to get from Miyajima to Kyoto. Is there any way to make this trip using the regular 7-day JR pass, or will we need to buy Shinkansen tickets?

From Kyoto, we are heading to Hakone - again, will we need Shinkansen tickets to get out of the Kyoto region?

Thanks,
Katie

Hi Katie,

The regular JR Pass can be used on the Shinkansen, no problem! However what can cause confusion is that there are different kinds of trains traveling on the Shinkansen. The only trains that you can't board are classified by the names "Nozomi/Mizuhou". All other trains types such as the Hikari, Sakura and Kodama are covered by the JR Pass.

Here's the route from Miyajima - Kyoto when using the JRPass.

So you can take the Shinkansen from both Tokyo - Hiroshima and from Hiroshima - Kyoto with the JR Pass without having to pay anything extra. The same applies when you take the train from Kyoto to Hakone.

I hope this helps!
Daniel
