Hi,

We are traveling to Japan next week, and have already purchased 7-day JR passes. We were wondering what is the best way to maximize the passes.

Day 1 - Tokyo (arriving at 5pm)
Day 2 - Travel to Hakone (might take the Hakone Free Pass in Odawara)
Day 3 - Travel to Kyoto
Day 4 - Kyoto
Day 5 - Day trip to Universal Studios
Day 6 - Day trip to Nara / Travel back to Tokyo (staying at Ikebukuro)
Day 7 - 9 Tokyo

Thank you!

Hello there,

Your travel is mostly concentrated on day 1-7, so I'd advise using the JR Pass for that period of time. This way you will also have a day left in Tokyo, where you could make a possible day trip to even further the savings made with the JR Pass. For instance Nikko, Kamakura or Yokohama all make for a great day trip from Tokyo.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel. So for traveling within Tokyo, what would be the most cost-efficient option? Also, I read about the Narita Express Tokyo Round Trip ticket, is this included in my JR Pass already or should I just purchase that separately? Cause if I use my JR pass, would not cover both the days of my travel from Narita to Tokyo and back.

Cheers!

I would also agree that using the Pass for days 1-7 is the best way. You can activate your pass at Narita Airport, and take the Narita Express into Tokyo - then return to Narita later on a cheap 1000 yen bus .
