questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

locals to travel with us

locals to travel with us

I will be traveling to Japan in March and April and will have a Japanese High School student with us as we travel around from Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. Is it correct that she will need to pay full price for each time we get on the train? Is there a pass of some type that she can get as she travels with us or do we pay as we go for each leg? Can we use a credit card or do we need cash for each one? We all ready have our passes and just want more information on this.

Thanks

Hi there,

The JR Pass is only for foreign visitors so your friend would have to buy normal tickets at the normal price. However you can reserve your seats together and buy a ticket for her at the same time. Train tickets can be bought with cash or most major credit cards.

Hope this answers your question,
Daniel

Daniel,

Thank you so much for the information. We are getting very excited to visit the beautiful country. How do I find out the cost of her train ticket we will be paying for her? This JR stuff is still confusing as we try to finalize our travel plans.
Thanks

Hi Again,

You can use Hyperdia to look up ticket prices and other route information. It's a great resource for planning with or without the JR Pass.

Be sure to read our blog beforehand so you know how to get started.

Hope this helps!
