Hi,
we are a family of 5 - parents and 3 kids in their 20's, ariving in Kansai airport Sept 18th, staying in Kyoto for 6 nights, till Sept 23rd, then to Tokyo for 8 nights. flying home from Haneda Sept 30th late evening.
We plan to make day trips in both areas - Kyoto to Nara, Osaka, Himeji Castle, and Tokyo to Nikko, Kamakura, Mount Fuji area and lakes.
Is it worth getting a 14 day JR pass? or maybe a 7 day pass that we activate around the 4th day of our visit so that it covers the Kyoto - Tokyo journey and some of the day trips. Or just normal tickets as I am not sure which and how many day trips we will do and if the children will join us on all of them.

thanks for your advice
Nicola

Hello Nicola,

For reading your itinerary, I think the 7 JR Pass would be most useful if you can cover your visit to Himeji, travel to Tokyo and at lease the day trip to Nikko with it. This will allow you to make savings over normal tickets and you can use the JR Pass as a single ticket for all these travel. Additionally, any other travel you may do with it is a nicely added bonus.

I do suggest making an itinerary with your children, as it would be a waste to buy a JR Pass and not use it :)

Hope this helps,
Daniel

thanks for the reply!!
so a one way trip Kyoto -Tokyo, return Kyoto-Himeji-Kyoto and return Tokyo-Nikko-Tokyo covers the price of a 7 day pass?

thanks
Nicola

Hi Nicola,

Yes more than that, that is assuming you'd use the Bullet trains. These are the falsest options available and by far the most convenient. You could use local train as well but these take up a lot longer and don't have reserved seating and such.

The approximate prices are:
Kyoto - Himeji 11,000yen (return)
Kyoto - Tokyo 14,000yen
Tokyo - Nikko 10,000yen (return) while the 7 day JR Pass is 29,100.
