Hello,

We will be traveling to Japan from November 18th to November 27th. We will be arriving at Haneda Airport around noon time on the 18th. This is our travel plan:

Kyoto:
Friday, 18: Arrive in Haneda and travel to Kyoto and then have dinner at Dotonbori
Saturday, 19: Explore Eastern Kyoto - Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Higashiyama, Gion
Sunday, 20: Explore Northern Kyoto- Kinkakuji, Shimogamo Shrine + Western Kyoto: Arashiyama
Monday, 21: Explore Southern Kyoto: Fushimi Inari Shrine

Tokyo
Tuesday, 22: Travel from Kyoto to Tokyo and explore Shibuya, Shinjuku, Harajuku in the evening
Wednesday, 23: Explore Tsukiji Fish market in the morning and then travel to Hakone mid-day
Thursday, 24: Explore Hakone and travel back in the evening to Tokyo
Friday, 25: DisneySea
Saturday, 26: Free time
Sunday, 27: Depart to Haneda airport in the early morning

Please advise:
1. When should we activate our JR pass? On the first leg of our trip from Haneda to Kyoto or while we are in Tokyo?
2. If you suggested using the JR pass on the second leg our trip, what's the best way to get to Kyoto from Haneda and how much will that cost?

Any alternative suggestion is appreciated!

Thanks!

Hello there,

1.) In a way this looks like a classic trip and its a good start for exploring Japan. Using a 7 day JR Pass here will fit in perfectly and the most important is to include the return trip Tokyo - Kyoto. From there I recommend including as much travel as possible, so you get the best possible savings. Since you travel to Osaka on the 18th, I would start using the JR Pass right away from there.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you for the response!

If we do end up using the JR pass from the 18th to the 24th, would you recommend purchasing the 72 hour Tokyo Subway ticket? Do you know if we can purchase those tickets once we land in Haneda and is it good to head to the airport with that ticket subway ticket on the 27th?

Hello there,

Note that its not 72 hours but a 3 day ticket! Days are counted from the first service until the last service of that day.

They are very economical if you plan on travelling around.

Wonderful!

I would also like to ask what's the best way to get to Dotonbori from Osaka using the JR pass?
