Hi,

I am planning a 2 week trip...first week of trip is in Kansai area.
3 days in Osaka, followed by 4 days in Kyoto with a day trip to Nara. Should I get the JR west pass?

For the second week, will you advise getting the JR pass for these 6 days?

Day 1: Kyoto - Osaka - Arashiyama - Osaka
Day 2: Osaka - Tokyo
Day 3: Tokyo
Day 4: Tokyo - Hakone - Tokyo
Day 5: Tokyo - Osaka
Day 6: Osaka - Kansai International Airport

Thanks in advance!

Hi there!

For your arrival consider buying normal tickets as you travel. The JR West pass is nice if you travel around Kansai to places such as Himeji or Wakayama. However it does not pay of for travel between Kyoto - Osaka - Nara because all these places are pretty close.

For travel in your second week, go for the JR Pass! I've made a little breakdown of ticket prices below, in order to see what kinds of savings which you can make.

Osaka - Tokyo ¥ 13,550
Tokyo - Hakone ¥ 6,260 (Odawara station, return)
Tokyo - Osaka ¥ 13,550
Osaka - Kansai Airport ¥ 1,160

For a total of ¥ 34,520 or ¥ 6,220 in savings as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300.

When you travel to Hakone with the JR Pass, take the bullet train from Tokyo to Odawara station. This is the Shinkansen station of Hakone from where you can use local travel further into the area.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
