questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

kansai wide pass

Kansai Wide Pass

Hi,

I would be traveling to these places in the next few days.

Day 1: Arrival Osaka at night
Day 2: Kyoto
Day 3: Kyoto
Day 4: Kyoto
Day 5: Mount Koya
Day 6: Kinosaki Onsen - staying there overnight
Day 7: osaka
Day 8: Osaka
Day 9: Kobe & Himeji
Day 10: flying back home.

I would like to ask can i purchase a 9 days kansai wide pass to cover all my trips or it has a maximum of 4 days only. If it is so, which days should i use my kansai wide pass. And what other pass could i buy to cover for my other transportations for other days??

I would also love to ask, would it better for me to book the kansai widepass online for reservation before my flight to Japan. Or is it alright (or safe enough) to purchase it at the kansai airport, as I will be arriving there at 10.25pm, but the purchasing pass shop is closed at 11pm.

Its quite urgent as I will be flying very soon.

Thank you very much, and hope to get a reply back very soon !

Best Regards
Carol

Hi Carol,

Get the Kansai Wide Pass for travel to Kinosaki and Kobe, you can use normal tickets for the rest. In Kyoto you could also consider the 500yen bus pass. Which allows for unlimited travel for a single day. Normal bus tickets are 220yen each ride, so it's easy to make savings.

As for where to purchase, you can just buy it directly at Kyoto station, so there's no need to reserve one in advance.

Happy travels,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

I was thinking to purchase these passes for these following days, do do think it worths the money, and i can save some?

Day 1: Arrival kansai Int'l airport > Osaka at night @ 10.25pm (Haruka & Icoca round pass)
Day 2: Shinimamiya station > Osaka > Kyoto (might be going kobe for onsen only @ night) (kansai thru pass)
Day 3: Shinimamiya station > Osaka > Kyoto (might be going kobe for onsen only @ night) (kansai thru pass)
Day 4: Shinimamiya station > Osaka > Kyoto (might be going kobe for onsen only @ night) (kansai thru pass)
Day 5: Shinimamiya station > Osaka > Mount Koya (Kansai wide pass)
Day 6: Shinimamiya station > Osaka > Himeji > Kinosaki Onsen (Kansai wide pass) - staying there overnight
Day 7: Kinosaki Onsen > Osaka > Shinimamiya station > Shin-osaka (Kansai wide pass)
Day 8: Shinimamiya station > Osaka > Kobe tour > Namba (Kansai wide pass)
Day 9: Osaka > might be going kobe for onsen only in the morning) . Kansai tour (normal passes? or any other pass?)
Day 10: flying back home @ 11am flight (haruka & Icoca round pass)

This is my final itinerary, but not sure if the passes i bought is good ?!

Hi Again!

Forget the thru pass and buy normal tickets for the first couple of days, or use ICOCA for easy travel.

The Wide Pass is nice for visiting Kinosaki, so try to cover as much as possible with it. You can't use it for travel to Koya so just buy a Haruka Package for arrival and use the wide pass for travel back to Kansai Airport.

Have a good flight!

Hi again,

So does that means, for i should just buy the one way Haruka & Icoca pass for the arrival day 1.

Day 2 to day 4 (Osaka, Kyoto, Nara) = normal passes
Day 5 (Mount Koya) = normal passes

But i have already booked a ryokan in kinosaki on the 19 july (day 6) ... so its not possible for me to include the kansai wide pass for the departure (Day 10).

SO what should i do ?

Hi Carol,

In that case just use the Wide Pass for travel to Kinosaki, you are already making savings by doing so and any additional travel is just a bonus.

If you can't use the Wide Pass for a day later, then the ICOCA return package is a good plan and yes normal tickets between day 2-4 is also a good plan :)

Hi Daniel,

So,
Day 1 & Day 10 = Haruka round & icoca pass
Day 2 to Day 5 = Normal passes
Day 6 to Day 9 = kansai wide pass

Btw,

e.g. Day 2: I calculated the cost for a trip from

the hotel im staying near shinimamiya station > osaka > kyoto (920 yen)
Kyoto > Osaka > namba (920 yen)
namba > Shinimamiya station (120 yen)
(maybe going kobe for night onsen) total = 1960 yen for the whole day trip (excluding kobe)

day 3 total = 1960 yen

Day 4 total = 2310 yen

Total for 3 days = 6230 yen ( thru pass for 3 days = 5200 yen)

Does this makes more savings if I use the kansai thru pass or the normal passes instead?

Sorry to trouble you again!

Carol

Hi again,

Would it better if I stick to these?

Day 1: arrival = haruka & Icoca round pass
Day 2 &/or Day 3 = normal passes
Day 4 & 5 &/or day 3 = 2 / 3 day kansai thru pass
(since Day 4 = I'm going from Osaka > Kyoto > Nara > Osaka, Day 5 = Osaka > Mount Koya > (Kobe) > osaka) Day 6 to Day 9 = kansai wide pass
Day 10: departure = haruka & Icoca round pass

So i was wondering, from the calculation above, will I save more having the thru pass or just normal pass??

Sorry, I'm a bit of detailed person, so would love to make sure everything is good !

Thanks in advance & sorry for any troubles made !

Best regards
Carol
