Hello everyone,

Greetings from Malaysia. We are a group of 4 travelling to Osaka - Tokyo - Kyoto in August 2016.

We will stay in Osaka for 2 nights, and depart to Tokyo on the 21st August for couple of nights and depart from Tokyo to Kyoto on the 24th August until our flight to Malaysia on the 27th August,

Our initial plan was to get the JR Rail Pass 7 day. However we would like to know the followings;

Can the 7 day pass be used for;

  1. train to Kansai Airport to Shin-Osaka?
  2. Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo
  3. Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto
  4. Train to Kyoto to Kansai Airport
  5. Can the pass be used to access subways in Tokyo and Osaka / Kyoto
  6. Can the pass be used to access local buses in Tokyo or Osaka / Kyoto

Or will it be cheaper to buy separate tickets such as the following option;

Depart from Osaka to Tokyo using overnight bus - Roughly less than 10,000 yen
Depart from Tokyo to Osaka using shinkansen - 14,110 Yen
Separate ticket from Kansai Airport to Osaka - Kindly advise me the price please?
Separate ticket from Kyoto to Kansai Airport - Kindly advies me the price please?

Appreciate a prompt response from anyone :) It is our first time in Japan!

Hi there,

The JR Pass is valid between all the cities you plan to travel to, as well as for local travel on the JR Network in Tokyo, Osaka and to a limited extend in Kyoto. The JR Pass is not valid on the metro/subway.

Compared to purchasing normal rail tickets, a 7 day JR Pass will be more economic. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is about the same as a normal return ticket Osaka - Tokyo using the Shinkansen. You can use our [fare calculator](www.jrpass.com/farecalculator] to find any ticket cost.

Personally, I would avoid using night buses where possible. I find it hard to sleep on the bus and am to tired to following morning to do anything. Which is a shame if you are only in Japan for a limited time.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
