Yes, a 7 day JR Pass is recommend here if you use it at least for the trip Shinjuku - Kyoto. The price of a 7 day JR Pass is about the same as a return ticket for this trip, so from there any additional travel you can cover adds to your savings.

The JR Pass can also be used for travel to Disneyland, Hakone and on local JR lines in Tokyo.
