Hi,

I think I should buy JR passes for my husband and I when we travel to Japan in September but am not sure if it is valid for our itinerary. I have read some conflicting information online. We want to travel from Narita to Tokyo, then by Shinkansen to Kyoto then take the Shinkansen back to Tokyo and finally travel back to Narita. I believe the JR pass will be best value if it is ok to use in all these destinations. Can you confirm? Thank you!!

Hi there,

Yes, your itinerary is a great example of where you can make nice savings with the JR Pass even if the amount of train travel is limited. The 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto on the Shinkansen, so basically any additional travel is free. A return Tokyo Narita Airport alone is around 6,000yen which are good savings already. You can also use the JR Pass for local travel on the JR in Tokyo and a little in Kyoto as well, possibly adding more.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
