Hi! My family and I will be visiting Japan in two weeks' time but now I'm still considering if it's a good move to purchase JR passes for our 6D5N stay in Japan. We will be based on Osaka, however, we are considering visiting Tokyo Disney Sea and Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium during our stay. So, will it be a cheaper to invest in 7-day JR pass for the family?

If we purchase the JR passes, do we still have to pay for transfers? For instance, from Tokyo station to Maihama station?

Please advise. Thank you.

Cheers

Hi there,

A 7 day JR Pass would be well suited for your travels, it would cover all of your trips on the JR (including transfers to Maihama). A 7-day JR Pass is roughly the same cost as a return Osaka - Tokyo, so you would be able to make some nice savings with the Pass. The train to and from Kansai Airport is also covered by the JR Pass.

I hope this helps,
Daniel

PS: The Aquarium in Osaka is also worth a visit if are interested in similar things.

Thanks, Daniel-san. Your reply is very helpful in helping me make the decision as to whether I should get the JR pass. :)

In the meantime, can you please advise me on the best hours to travel on JR as I do not wish to meet with the crowd especially when I have older folks travelling with me. Thanks once again.

Cheers.

Hi again,

The public rush hour in Japan is between 6.00-9.00 a.m. and 16.30-19.15 during these times local trains are very crowded (like the Yamanote line in Tokyo) and it may be hard to stand. I would indeed try to avoid them, if you travel with children or elder folk.

Do note that this does not apply to limited express trains and Shinkansen (bullet trains) with seat reservations, as passengers are limited to the amount of seats available.

Let me know if I can help with anything else :)

Hi again, Daniel-san. Thank you for your prompt reply. Can't thank you enough for your help. You've answered yet another of my query that I have not posted :-). I assume I do not need to purchase green car passes to make seat reservations yah :-)

Thanks and cheers,
Fran

Hi Fran,

I think that you will be perfectly fine with a ordinary pass.
Still if you wish to read more about green class, see our blog post that does a good job of describing the extra comfort.

Cheers 'n Beers!
