Hi,

I have a multiple entry 5 years visitor Visa for Japan and I am scheduled to travel to Japan on 28th October. Just now when I was ordering JR pass I saw this:

"Who is NOT eligible?

The Japan rail pass will NOT be activated in Japan if the passenger is a visa holder of any other entry status or visa type regardless of duration.

Examples of non-eligible visa

Multiple entry visa (Include Temporary Visitor Visa Multiple Entry status)"

Please let me know if I should order my JR Pass or not. If I am not eligible then how will I travel?

Thanks,
Archana

Hello Archana,

I am afraid that you would not quality with a multiple entry visa. My advise would be to buy normal rail tickets or look at a local pass in Japan.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the reply.

But that's really bad. Mine is a multiple entry visitor visa only. Why am I not allowed to get a JR Pass? I am visiting Japan just for visitation purpose. I don't intend to stay here more than 12 days.

If I buy normal tickets it's going to be super expensive.

Hi Daniel,

I checked my eligibility for the JR Pass on various forums and spoke to many people who have availed the JR Pass on multiple entry visitor visa. This is what I found:

On arrival, at immigrations, I will be given a stamp/sticker as "Temporary Visitor" since my purpose of visiting Japan is sightseeing only. This "temporary stamp" is what is required for exchange of JR Pass.

Here is the Extract from the JR Rail Pass website for your perusal (http://www.japanrailpass.net/en/about_jrp.html#bm_001)"

You are a foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sight-seeing, under the entry status of "temporary visitor."

Temporary Visitor entry status, according to Japanese Immigration Law, allows a stay in Japan of 15 days or 90 days for "sight-seeing, etc."

If you apply for a "stay for sight-seeing" when you enter Japan, entry personnel will stamp your passport as "Temporary Visitor," as shown below. *In order to receive or use JAPAN RAIL PASS, your passport must bear this stamp or sticker.

So i guess there shouldn't be any problem in getting a JR Pass.

Please do confirm if this is correct or not.

Thanks a lot.

Best,
Archana

Hi Archana,

We've had report of customers going to Japan and being denied a JR Pass with a multiple entry visa. As we are only a re-seller for the JR Pass and not JR itself, I can not tell you why this decision is made. Only inform you about it, as good as I can.

The stamp you receive on arrival is a single entry visa, which as far as JR states, is the only valid visa type.

If you have further questions, please contact our support team via [email protected], our team will be more than happy to look at options for you.

Kind regards,
Daniel
