Hi,

I will be traveling with my daughter (22) to Tokyo for 5 days at the end of May. We are planning an overnight trip in Kyoto and then back to Tokyo. Looking at the JR Pass for 7 days, I am not sure it is worthwhile for me? With Kyoto as our only city outside Tokyo that we will be visiting, is it still worthwhile to get the 7 days JR Pass? Also, can the JR Pass be used for a bus ride from Narita to Shibuya?

Would much appreciate some guidance in this area. If the pass is not worth it for my itinerary, what options are available?

Thank you in advance for any advice in this area.

Best!
Dym

Hi Dym,

A do think it would be worth it to consider a 7 day JR Pass. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is almost the same as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen. Now you get the return + 7 days of unlimited travel.

You can use the JR Pass to explore Tokyo on the JR Network, as well as on the Narita Express to Shibuya and back to Narita Airport.

We have a full map of all lines covered in Tokyo here:

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you so much for your detailed reply. One more question, with JR Pass from Tokyo to Kyoto, I can only ride the Hikari line which only runs ever 30 minutes. If I plan to travel on outbound to Kyoto on a Sunday (May 29) morning, would you know if the train ever gets over booked? With JR Pass, can
I make seat reservation and how long in advance?

Would appreciate some advice on this.

Thanks again!
Dym

Hi Dym,

Trains rarely sell out. You don't have to worry about tickets, unless you travel on national holidays.

Reservations can be made up to 30 days in advance but you have to be in Japan.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks so much for your reply! I will definitely be getting the JR Pass now. For travel inTokyo, can I use the JR Pass for the subway too or do I need to buy. Seica pass for that? Please advise.

Also, can I order a pocket wifi with JR Pass? If so, what model/package do you recommend?

Thanks again and hope to hear back from you soon.

Best Regards,
Dym

Hi Dym,

Yes, a Suica or Pasmo card is recommended for local travel. It does not provide a discount but makes travel more convenient as you never have to buy a normal ticket again or queue up to buy one.

For Pocket Wifi, you could place an order via:

We have teamed up with Ninja Wifi and the service is incredible.

Hope this helps too!
Daniel
