questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

jr pass - tokyo - aomori - hokkaido - biei - ashikawa

JR Pass - Tokyo - Aomori - Hokkaido - Biei - Ashikawa

Hi,

I will be travelling to Japan on coming 1st to 10th Sep'14.

I am confused with the lines and passes available for me to use. It will be great if you could advice me which JR pass is the best for me. (most saving) My Plan Itinerary as below:

Tokyo -> Aomori (2 days in Aomori) (JAL welcome to Japan Air Pass is it available for this?)
Aomori -> Sapporo ( Is the Pass included Sleeper Train?) (2 days in Sapporo - will travel between Utaru and Noboribetsu)
Sapporo -> Furano & Biei (plan to rent a car) - Will I have discount if I purchase JR Hokkaido pass? General JR Pass not entitle for discount?
Biei -> Ashikawa
Ashikawa -> Tokyo (plan to fly by ANA Air pass)

Kindly advice which will be the best pass for me.

Or You can give suggestions. :)

Thanks.

Hi Steven Lim,

I think it would be best to buy normal tickets as you travel, since you will use both plane, train and car to move around, there simply is not enough train travel for a pass to pay off.

However you could consider a 7 day JR Pass if you traveled from Tokyo - Aomori by rail and in Hokkaido as well. The night train between Aomori - Sapporo is included as well.

There's no discount for renting a car with the JR Pass.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Dear Daniel,

Thanks for your advice.

May I have the night train's name that provide overnight travel from Aomori to Sapporo?

Thanks.

Hi there,

That would be the Hamanasu trains :)

It's pretty famous within Japan.
