Hi,
The short answer is, you can't. You can take JR to Nagoya by bullet train, but from there you need to take a Meitetsu train (not covered by the pass), or airport bus. For other more pricey options, you might look at their website

Best of luck.

BTW Akihabara Akihabara is interesting even if you are not shopping for anything in particular. But it won't take you long to look through the place unless you have a big interest in buying some gadget, or manga/anime.

In Tokyo a few of the best places to see are the Tsukiji Fish Market, plus the site that every last tourist goes to see, the Sensoji Temple. If you are in Tokyo on a Sunday afternoon, be sure to go visit Harajuku to see the youth with their wild fashions. Meiji Shrine and Yoyogi Park are next to it and well worth seeing also. And be sure not to miss the Shibuya Hachiko intersection especially on a weekend when it looks like half the city is crossing the street all at once.

If you have time, seeing Kamakura is well worth it.

If you can, try to find a little time to see the Japanese themselves. Go visit a Japanese supermarket and see what people typically eat. Look through a park and watch the Japanese kids play. Learn about the history of some of the places you visit before your departure - it will give your trip so much more meaning.

Good luck.

Hi,

Thank you for the very useful information.

I will be staying in Japan for 7 days, 3 1/2 days in Osaka then 3 1/2 days in Tokyo. Arrival in Osaka and departure is in Nagoya, Chubu Airport. Last day in Tokyo will be used mainly for travel from Tokyo to Nagoya. What time do you think is the best time to leave Tokyo for Nagoya? How long is the travel time?

Since we are in Nagoya, we are planning to visit Nagoya castle as our last stop then proceed to airport.

Also, I am planning to go to Mt. Fuji. Should I go there while I am in Osaka? My accommodation is near JR Namba.

Thanks again.

Hi,
If you want to see some views of Mt. Fuji, the two places to go would be either Hakone or the Fuji 5 Lakes Area. Neither area is served by JR though there are other regional passes for both. But it would be far better to do it as a day trip while in Tokyo rather than from Osaka.

A day trip to Nikko is also worthwhile.

If you have time in Osaka, it is better to to a half or full day trip to Nara in addition to seeing Kyoto. Nara Park has most of the best of the city, all in one place, including Kasuga Shrine, feeding the deer, Kofukuji Temple, the Isuien and Yoshikien Gardens, plus the Todaiji Great Buddha which is a must-see place that's mind blowing.
Since you are already seeing Tokyo, you can largely skip Osaka during the day. After the temples of Kyoto close down around 5PM, you can zip over to Osaka for the evening. At night the city comes alive and has some great places to see, such as Dotonbori, plus the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg, and Abeno Harukas Bldg are wonderful.

Another possibility if you start early is doing a day trip to see Hiroshima and Miyajima Miyajima. You can cover the best places in Hiroshima City (Peace Park/Museum, castle, Shukkeien Garden) and spend about ¾ of a day to see Miyajima.

For Miyajima, please note that there are 2 ferry companies there - make sure you go to the JR one if you want to use a JR pass for it.

In addition, there are other numerous great places you can visit in the area. Okayama is not far and it is famous for its castle, plus Korakuen, one of Japan's Top 3, and also the Handayama Garden. If you'd like to get off the beaten trail for a while, the half day hike up to Konpirasan in Kotohira is stunning. Going to Takamatsu is also nice - it has one of Japan's finest gardens also, called Ritsurin.
Hiroshima also has a number of good places. Miyajima is the most famous, and aside from Hiroshima itself, Onomichi with its temple tour and Kosanji Temple is spectacular. Just beyond Miyajima also lies Iwakuni with its historical bridge and castle on top of the mountain. Taikodani is also a beautiful shrine in Tsuwano, Shimane. Hagi Castle was actually delightful, and the preserved samurai district and Mori related temples a rarity. One of the very best is the Akiyoshi Limestone Cave, a 300 million year old wonder with huge caverns and underground river running through it.

You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia. But be sure under "More Options" to deselect "Nozomi..." since you can't ride that if you are riding on the Pass.

All in all, a lot more to explore and enjoy.

Hello,

Thank you for being very informative.

Also, forgot to tell that our second day in Osaka and Tokyo will be spent in USJ and Tokyo Disney Sea. So that makes our time shorter to do the rest of the itinerary. That being said, when do you think is the best day to go to Mt. Fuji? Our plan is to go to shibuya crossing, shinjuku and some castles on our first day in Tokyo. We will be staying in Akihabara.

Thank you again.

Hi,
I recommend a full day to see near Hakone. A popular route is the Hakone Loop. You can get through it if you start fairly early in the morning, and it has a lot of varied sights in addition to Mt. Fuji if the weather is good.

Good luck!
