questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

jr kanto pass

JR Kanto Pass

Hi

Me & my family (my wife & my 2 kids age 6yrs & 1yr) are planning to go to Japan from 1st Dec till 10 Dec 2015.

We plan to stay in Tokyo from 1st Dec till 8th Dec, thereafter we plan to to Nagano/Yudanaka to experience snow & see the snow monkey.

We understand that the JR Kanto Pass only cover Shinkansen till Saku-Daira.

Is it possible for us to use JR Kanto Pass to go to Nagano station and pay the difference?

Likewise from Nagano to Tokyo then to Narita Airport using the Narita Express by using the JR Kanto Pass also and pay the difference?

Thanks.

Hi there,

Yes you could get on the train and pay the fare difference at your final station.

Going back to Tokyo would be a bit different, as you first would have to buy a ticket until the station from where the JR Kanto Pass is valid.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you Mr Daniel-san for your reply.

Meaning going back from Nagano to Tokyo, we need to buy a ticket from Nagano to Saku-Daira then use the JR pass from Saku-Daira to Tokyo?

If it's so, then do we need to alight at Saku-Daira then board another train or we can just stay in the same train and proceed to Tokyo?

Thanks a lot!

Yes you buy a ticket from Nagano to Saku-Daira. You can stay on the same train but may stay on the same train but possible you'll have to use a non reserved seat.
