Hi,
Travelling to Japan in Oct/Nov for 9 days starting in Tokyo and departing from Kansai.

Day 1: Tokyo
Day 2: Tokyo
Day 3: Day trip to Kamakura (activate rail pass)
Day 4: Tokyo to Takayama via Toyama
Day 5: Takayama
Day 6: Bus trip to Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa
Day 7: Kanazawa
Day 8: Day trip to Kurobe Gorge via Kurobe-Unazukionsen
Day 9: Depart from Kanazawa to Kansai

Would it be better to get the All Japan 7 Day pass or the Osaka-Tokyo Hokuriku pass?
When we go to the Kurobe Gorge it will be Nov 3., Culture Day. Do you foresee problems with crowds? Should we go on Day 7 instead?

Thanks, Naka

Hi there,

Looking at the total cost of your itinerary, my advise would be to buy normal tickets instead of using a pass. The amount of distance covered is not that much, even though you travel every day. A JR Pass would have been useful if used for a return Tokyo - Kyoto, or a little more travel using the Shinkansen.

You can use the JR Pass Fare Calculator to find an approximate ticket cost of a single route or even your full itinerary.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
