Hi there I need some clarification about validity of Japan Rail Pass. My guide book says that the pass are available for 7 or 14 Consecutive Days. Does this mean it has to be used everyday after validating it for the first time to use the pass without any loss. Please help me as I am about to order the pass on-line for my imminent departure for Japan.

Hi there,

The JR Pass can be purchased for a period of 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days. Basically this means that you can use the train, including the Shinkansen, as much as you like within this period of time. The JR Pass expires after this period, no matter how much travel you've done. However you don't have to use it every day and the price is actually based on this. For instance you can already make savings with it if you make you use it for one day and make a return Tokyo - Osaka for instance.

Hope this helps!

Thank you very much indeed for your prompt response. I would like to have your thoughts and advice on the following matters i.e.iour itinerary for two weeks in Japan.

Arrival and Departure from Narita
3 nights in Tokyo
Day 4 to Nagoya
Day 6-9 around The Alps
Day 10 Kanazawa
Day 11-13 Kyoto
Day 14 return to Tokyo for the flight back home for a midday flight from Narita on the next day (day 15)

For this loosely knit itinerary would you suggest a 7 days (assuming a local pass can be used in Tokyo)or a 14 days JR Pass would be more suitable for the sake of both convenience and cost effectiveness. Thank you again for your earlier advice.

Hi Again,

This one is a little bit tricky, your travel is spread out over a period longer than 7 days, so you would want to use a 14 day JR Pass. The 14 day JR Pass would certainly be convenient as you would just need one ticket for all your travel but I could not say for if you can make savings with it, this would depend on the exact travel you would do in the Japanese alps.

I'd more than happy to give you a full list of ticket prices if you have the route completed.

Hope this helps too!

Thanks for your advice. One thing we are absolutely sure is that duration of our trip will be 15 days including the day of arrival and departure from Narita Tokyo. My query is that if we get 14 day JR Pass can we travel within the cities for short trips apart from medium and long distance with the same pass or do we still have to buy separate tickets for travelling e.g. Tokyo or Kyoto. We are now reworking on our itinerary so that we can use the pass more effectively. Also thank you for your offer of providing the price list of current JR Pass. It will be very much appreciated. Thank you again for your assistance with our planning to this trip.
