Hi Chris,

It really depends on what kind of travel you wish to do. For instance you could go for a 21 day JR Pass and use it to explore the country. Then spend your other days locally exploring Tokyo. You can also buy a combination of rail passes such as a 7 day pass and 21 day pass, since there's no limit to the amount of passes which you can purchase.

Either way let me know what you plan to visit and I could give you a better idea of possibilities.

Well I worked it out I'm there for 33 days hoping to fly in at Fukuoka on to Hiroshima for 5 days then on to the kansai region doing osaka Kyoto Nara and Kobe for 12 days then on to Tokyo and the surrounding cities Yokohama Chiba possibly nikko for the remainder of the trip ,....that's my general thoughts to start with it may change I'll be flying home from narita either way

Thanks Daniel

Hi Again!

You really have a great amount of time to spend in Japan! Based on your itinerary I would suggest buying normal tickets for now. The JR Pass is great if you use it to travel around multiple times, you have the luxury of staying at each place for a good amount of time - since the JR Pass uses consecutive days - it would not pay off to get a JR Pass while staying in one place.

Anyway a JR Pass can quickly become worth it though, if you decide to make some side trips. For now though normal tickets would be the best.

Feel free to let me know if plans change - I'de be more than happy to check if a JR Pass would be of use for you!

I wasn't really planning on activating it until I was leaving Hiroshima because after that is where the heavy use will come into effect unless it's relatively cheap to travel to the near by cities in kansai?

Travel around Kansai is pretty cheap and it is hard to make any pass pay of there (even the JR Kansai Pass). For instance Osaka - Kyoto is just 540 yen/one way and Kyoto - Nara 690.
